The JBL STAGE82AM is an 8-inch component car subwoofer designed to add low-frequency output to a compatible vehicle audio system. It is a passive driver, so it requires an external amplifier and a properly built sealed or ported enclosure. Its compact 8-inch format can suit systems where available enclosure space is limited.

With 200 watts RMS and 800 watts peak power handling, the Stage 82 is intended for use with an amplifier matched to its 4-ohm nominal impedance. Its 88 dB sensitivity and 38 Hz to 200 Hz frequency-response rating support bass reinforcement across the low-frequency range. Use an amplifier low-pass crossover to keep higher frequencies out of the subwoofer.

The Stage 82 has a single 4-ohm voice coil and conventional wired speaker terminals. JBL specifies a 7-1/16-inch mounting cutout, 3-3/4-inch mounting depth, and 8-1/8-inch outer diameter. Check enclosure clearance, mounting-hole placement, and available depth before installation.

For a complete bass upgrade, pair the Stage 82 with a suitable mono or bridged amplifier, an enclosure, speaker wire, and the required vehicle power and signal wiring. JBL provides sealed and vented enclosure recommendations for this driver, allowing system builders to choose a compact sealed alignment or a tuned ported design. A foam mounting gasket is included to help seal the driver to its enclosure.

Design & Installation

The Stage 82 uses a polypropylene cone, high-roll rubber surround, and a 1.5-inch voice coil in a round 8-inch driver format. Its outer diameter is 8-1/8 inches, with a mounting height of 7/16 inch above the mounting surface. The included foam gasket helps create a seal between the driver frame and enclosure.

Install this subwoofer in a sealed or ported enclosure sized for the driver, using a 7-1/16-inch cutout and at least 3-3/4 inches of mounting depth. Connect it to an external amplifier that is appropriate for a 4-ohm, 200-watt RMS subwoofer, observing terminal polarity. JBL recommends 14 AWG to 8 AWG speaker wire depending on run length, with heavier wire preferred for runs over 6 feet.
