The JBL Stadium 122SSI is a 12-inch high-performance car audio subwoofer designed for systems that need substantial low-frequency output with flexible amplifier matching. Its SSI selectable-impedance switch lets the installer configure the woofer for either a 2-ohm or 4-ohm load. This makes it suitable for a new custom bass system or for upgrading an existing amplifier and enclosure setup.

With 500 watts RMS power handling and a 25Hz–175Hz frequency response, the Stadium 122SSI is intended to reproduce deep bass while covering the upper-bass range needed for a well-integrated subwoofer system. Its 92dB sensitivity rating is measured at 2.83V. The 12-inch format suits listeners who have room for a properly sized enclosure and want bass support beyond factory speakers.

JBL's SSI technology uses a dual-impedance switch rather than requiring a different subwoofer model for each target load. The switch can be set to 2 or 4 ohms to accommodate different amplifier and multi-subwoofer configurations. Turn the subwoofer amplifier off before changing the SSI switch position.

An aero-cooled voice-coil design channels air through the motor as the cone moves, helping expose the voice coil to airflow. JBL pairs this arrangement with a 2-inch voice coil to balance thermal power handling and moving mass. The result is an engineered driver intended for sustained use in a car-audio enclosure.

The Stadium 122SSI is a passive component subwoofer, so it requires an external amplifier and enclosure. JBL specifies a 1.3-cubic-foot sealed enclosure or a 2.5-cubic-foot vented enclosure as reference designs. Its 2- or 4-ohm flexibility can simplify amplifier selection now and system expansion later.

Key Features

  • SSI Selectable Impedance: Choose a 2-ohm or 4-ohm load to suit the amplifier and system design.
  • 500W RMS Handling: Supports amplifier matching around its continuous 500-watt power rating.
  • Aero-Cooled Voice Coil: Airflow through the motor helps manage voice-coil heat during operation.
  • 2-Inch Voice Coil: Uses an oversized 50mm voice coil for thermal capacity and controlled mass.
  • 92dB Sensitivity: Delivers rated sensitivity of 92dB at 2.83V.
  • Integrated Push Terminals: Accommodate up to 8 AWG speaker wire for the subwoofer connection.

Design & Installation

The Stadium 122SSI combines a 12-inch driver platform with an aero-cooled motor and 2-inch voice coil. Its integrated terminals support up to 8 AWG wire, while the selectable-impedance switch is built into the subwoofer for system configuration. JBL lists a 7-inch mounting depth and an 11-1/5-inch cutout diameter.

Install the subwoofer in a compatible sealed or vented enclosure and pair it with an external amplifier appropriate for the selected 2-ohm or 4-ohm setting. JBL's reference sealed enclosure volume is 1.3 cubic feet; its vented reference is 2.5 cubic feet with a 4-inch-diameter, 10-inch-long port tuned to 35Hz. Use 14–8 AWG speaker wire based on wire-run length, with heavier wire preferred for runs longer than 6 feet.
