The Hertz SS12D2 is a 12-inch SPL-focused car subwoofer designed for systems that need substantial low-frequency output and durable high-excursion operation. Its dual 2-ohm voice-coil configuration provides wiring flexibility when matching the subwoofer to a compatible mono or multi-channel amplifier. With 1000 watts continuous power handling, it is intended for serious aftermarket bass upgrades rather than factory-power applications.

This model is aimed at enthusiasts building high-output systems, including installations where sustained bass performance is important. The non-pressed paper cone with cotton fiber is designed to balance low moving mass with structural stiffness, supporting its 86 dB sensitivity rating. Its sound character and construction are tailored toward impactful bass reproduction in properly designed enclosures.

A 75 mm, 4-layer dual voice coil is mounted on a vented former to help manage heat during demanding operation. The large ferrite motor, thermally designed basket, and nickel-plated high-current terminals support the electrical and mechanical demands of a high-power subwoofer system. These elements work together to help maintain control through heavy bass passages.

The SS12D2 uses a progressive double-layer spider, multilayer foam surround, oversized suspension components, and oversized leadwires. This suspension system is built to accommodate the driver’s long excursion while maintaining consistent operation over time. Hertz specifies 15.4 mm of Xmax and 20.7 mm of X-mech for the driver.

It can be used in either a sealed or reflex enclosure based on the desired system character and available space. Hertz publishes a compact 35 L sealed alignment and a 55 L reflex alignment, giving installers a documented starting point for enclosure design. Pair it with an amplifier and wiring configuration appropriate for the final nominal impedance and the subwoofer’s 1000 W continuous rating.

The SS12D2 combines a non-pressed paper cone with cotton fiber, a multilayer foam surround, progressive double-layer spiders, and an oversized ferrite magnet assembly. Its basket is designed for mechanical strength and heat dissipation, while nickel-plated push connectors provide a secure connection point. The driver weighs 8.8 kg and has a 184 mm overall depth, so enclosure strength and mounting clearance should be planned before installation.

Use the 283 mm mounting cutout and allow at least the published 161 mm mounting depth behind the baffle. Hertz lists a 35 L sealed enclosure and a 55 L reflex enclosure as reference designs, both using 19 mm wood; the reflex design uses a 160 mm inside-diameter, 300 mm long port. Wire the dual 2-ohm coils in series, parallel, or separately only when the amplifier and complete system impedance are compatible, and use speaker cable up to 12 AWG at the terminals.
