The Zoom ZA1X Four is an acoustic-instrument multi-effects processor with an integrated expression pedal. It gives players a compact way to shape amplified acoustic sound, add performance effects, and practice with built-in accompaniment. It is designed for instruments such as acoustic guitar, violin, saxophone, trumpet, harmonica, and upright bass.

Its processing platform supports up to five effects at once, allowing musicians to combine tone-shaping, modulation, dynamics, ambience, and other effect types in a single patch. Acoustic guitar modeling can help tailor the output character for different guitar-body styles and pickup types. The integrated expression pedal adds real-time control for compatible pedal effects during performance.

The ZA1X Four includes 50 patch memories for organizing sounds by song, instrument, or playing situation. MEMORY mode is intended for moving between saved patches, while STOMP mode lets the player switch individual effects within a patch. EDIT mode provides access to effect selection, order, and parameter adjustments.

For solo practice and performance, the pedal combines a 30-second looper with 68 built-in rhythm patterns. A chromatic tuner and anti-feedback filter add practical tools for acoustic stages and rehearsal spaces. The output EQ adjusts the overall output character independently of individual patch settings.

The included MAA-1 mic amp expands the system for instruments captured with a microphone. It provides a balanced XLR input, gain adjustment, and +48V phantom power for compatible condenser microphones. Connect the ZA1X Four to an acoustic amplifier, mixer, powered speaker, headphones, or a recording-oriented setup, then use Zoom Guitar Lab software to manage compatible patches and effects.

Key Features

  • Acoustic Multi-Effects Processing: Uses acoustic-focused effects for amplified string and wind instruments.
  • Five Simultaneous Effects: Builds layered sounds with up to five effects in one patch.
  • Integrated Expression Pedal: Provides foot control over compatible real-time pedal effects.
  • Looper And Rhythm Section: Combines 30-second looping with 68 acoustic-oriented rhythm patterns.
  • MAA-1 Mic Amp Included: Adds XLR microphone connection, gain control, and phantom power.
  • Flexible Power Options: Operates from AA batteries, USB power, or an optional adapter.

Design & Installation

Zoom does not publish a housing-material specification, but the ZA1X Four uses a compact pedalboard-style enclosure with footswitches, a 128 × 32 dot-matrix LCD, onboard controls, and an integrated expression pedal. Its layout is intended for floor use, with the expression pedal positioned alongside the main multi-effects controls. The separate MAA-1 mic amp is a compact inline interface for microphone-based instruments.

Connect an instrument to the 1/4-inch INPUT jack and route the combined line/headphone OUTPUT to an amplifier, mixer, powered speaker, or headphones. The AUX IN stereo mini jack accepts an external playback source, and its signal passes directly to the output without going through the effects. For microphone use, connect the MAA-1 to the pedal input; use four AA batteries, USB power, or the optional Zoom AD-16 9V DC adapter for the pedal.
