The BOSS RE-202 Space Echo is a stereo delay and reverb pedal that recreates the character and operation of the Roland RE-201 tape echo. It gives guitarists, keyboard players, producers, and other musicians vintage-style echo textures without the maintenance demands of a mechanical tape unit. Its controls make it suitable for everything from short rhythmic repeats to dense ambient trails.
The pedal models the behaviors that shaped the original Space Echo sound, including tape saturation, preamp coloration, motor variation, tape age, and spring reverb character. A dedicated Saturation control adds compression and coloration associated with magnetic tape, while the Wow & Flutter control adjusts natural modulation. Selectable new and aged tape conditions provide different levels of tape character.
The RE-202 uses the original three-head concept and adds a fourth virtual head for 12 total echo modes. This expanded head configuration supports single repeats, multi-head rhythmic patterns, and layered echo combinations. It also provides extended delay time compared with the original RE-201 design.
A separate stereo reverb section includes the original-style spring sound plus hall, plate, room, and ambience reverb types. The pedal offers true stereo input and output, making it practical for stereo amplifiers, pedalboards, keyboards, mixers, and recording setups. Selectable guitar and line-level input operation helps match the pedal to different signal sources.
For system integration, the RE-202 offers tap tempo, memory recall, MIDI connectivity, expression-pedal support, and external footswitch control. Users can select an unprocessed analog dry signal or the modeled RE-201 preamp sound, and the direct signal can be muted for parallel effects routing. Four memories are available from the pedal itself, while additional memories are accessible through MIDI program changes.
Key Features
- Space Echo Modeling: Recreates key tape, preamp, and spring reverb behaviors of the RE-201.
- 12 Echo Modes: Combines three original-style heads with one additional virtual tape head.
- Stereo Reverb: Provides spring, hall, plate, room, and ambience reverb selections.
- Tape Character Controls: Saturation and Wow & Flutter tailor compression and modulation.
- True Stereo I/O: Supports mono or stereo routing with guitar and line-level sources.
- Expanded Control: Includes tap tempo, MIDI, external control, and expression-pedal support.
Design & Installation
The RE-202 is a compact floor pedal with dedicated footswitches, knobs, and buttons for direct operation. Its control layout includes separate echo, tone, reverb, tape-character, memory, and input controls. BOSS specifies a buffered bypass design and includes a rubber foot for placement stability; the manufacturer does not publish a specific enclosure-material specification.
Connect an instrument or line-level source to INPUT A/MONO for mono use, or use INPUT A/MONO and INPUT B for stereo operation. Connect OUTPUT A/MONO alone for mono output or both output jacks for stereo systems, then power the pedal with the included AC adaptor. External FS-5U, FS-6, or FS-7 footswitches, compatible expression pedals, and Type A TRS MIDI connections can be used when additional control is needed.
