The BOSS SL-2 Slicer is a compact effects pedal that rhythmically chops an incoming signal into repeating patterns. It gives players and performers a way to add synchronized pulse, motion, and percussive texture without needing a larger multi-effects processor. Mono and stereo connections allow it to work within a wide range of instrument and effects setups.
The SL-2 is designed for guitar, bass, stereo effect rigs, keyboards, and other compatible audio sources. Its sliced sound can add rhythmic definition to sustained chords, loops, ambient layers, and lead parts. The pedal provides both direct and processed-signal balance control, helping users set the effect from subtle movement to fully processed output.
Eight slicer type positions cover single-slicer, dual-slicer, tremolo, harmonic, and sound-effect-oriented patterns. The pedal includes 88 onboard patterns, with the Type and Variation controls providing quick access to different rhythmic behaviors. Attack and Duty controls shape the onset and length of each slice for more precise rhythmic character.
Digital processing is built around a 48 kHz sample rate, 24-bit AD conversion with BOSS Adaptive Focus processing, and 32-bit DA conversion. Tempo is adjustable from 40 to 300 BPM with the dedicated control or footswitch tap tempo. The SL-2 can also synchronize to incoming MIDI clock for use with external sequencers and MIDI-capable performance systems.
The compact SL-2 fits easily into a pedalboard signal chain and supports mono or stereo operation. Its output modes include fixed, effect/direct split, and multiple stereo panning options for wider movement across two outputs. Pattern Import connectivity works with BOSS Tone Studio for SL-2, allowing compatible patterns to be exchanged from a computer.
Key Features
- 88 Onboard Patterns: Provides a broad selection of rhythmic slicing sounds without external hardware.
- Eight Slicer Types: Covers single, dual, tremolo, harmonic, and SFX-style processing.
- Attack And Duty Controls: Adjusts slice onset and the length of audible sound.
- Stereo I/O: Supports mono rigs and stereo signal paths with dedicated A and B jacks.
- MIDI Synchronization: Receives MIDI clock and control messages from compatible external devices.
- Pattern Import Port: Uses USB B connectivity with BOSS Tone Studio for SL-2.
Design & Installation
The SL-2 uses the familiar BOSS compact-pedal format, measuring 73 mm wide, 129 mm deep, and 59 mm high. Its control layout includes Type, Variation, Attack, Duty, Tempo, and Balance knobs, plus a footswitch and CHECK indicator. The CHECK indicator shows effect status, tempo activity, and battery condition.
For mono use, connect the source to INPUT A (MONO) and the next device to OUTPUT A (MONO). For stereo operation, connect both A and B input and output jacks; stereo output modes require both outputs. The pedal runs from the included 9 V alkaline battery or an optional BOSS PSA-series AC adaptor, while optional footswitches, expression pedals, and TRS/MIDI cables expand control options.

Can the BOSS SL-2 be used in a mono rig?
Yes. Connect your source to INPUT A (MONO) and your amp or next pedal to OUTPUT A (MONO). INPUT A and OUTPUT A are the designated mono connections.
Does the SL-2 support stereo operation?
Yes. It has INPUT A, INPUT B, OUTPUT A, and OUTPUT B connections for stereo use. The selectable stereo output modes are available when both output jacks are connected.
What power source does the SL-2 use?
It can operate from the included 9 V alkaline battery or an optional BOSS PSA-series AC adaptor. Current draw is 95 mA, and estimated alkaline battery life is approximately 2.5 hours of continuous use.
Can I sync the SL-2 to MIDI equipment?
Yes. Its MIDI IN connector receives MIDI clock, start, continue, stop, and supported control-change messages. When MIDI clock is received, the SL-2 synchronizes its tempo to the external device.
Can I add or exchange slicer patterns?
The pedal includes a USB B Pattern Import port for use with BOSS Tone Studio for SL-2. A computer connection is used to swap compatible slice patterns.
Can I connect an expression pedal or external footswitch?
Yes. The CTL/EXP jack supports compatible external footswitches or expression pedals. BOSS lists the FS-5U, FS-6, FS-7, FV-500H, FV-500L, EV-30, and Roland EV-5 as optional compatible products.
