The Zoom A1 FOUR is a compact multi-effects pedal for acoustic instruments, including acoustic guitar, saxophone, trumpet, violin, harmonica, and acoustic bass. It gives players a practical way to add effects, shape tone, practice with accompaniment, and connect to a PA system or headphones from one unit. The included MAA-1 mic amp also supports using microphones with instruments that do not have pickups.

Designed for acoustic string and wind players, the A1 FOUR provides effects voiced for the different response characteristics of acoustic instruments. It includes more than 80 built-in effects, with more than 35 designed for acoustic use. Up to five effects can be arranged and used simultaneously in a patch.

For acoustic guitar, the pedal includes AG MODEL processing that uses impulse-response technology to model acoustic guitar body characteristics. Available model parameters include gain, bass, mid, and treble, while the AG Pickup Selector can be set for piezo or magnetic pickups. This helps players tailor an amplified acoustic sound for their instrument and pickup system.

The A1 FOUR also supports independent performance and practice workflows. Its built-in looper records up to 30 seconds or 64 beats of CD-quality audio, and 68 acoustic-oriented rhythm patterns can be used alongside the looper. Fifty patch-memory locations allow frequently used effect combinations to be stored and recalled.

With its 1/4-inch instrument input, AUX input, combined line/headphone output, USB connectivity, and battery operation, the A1 FOUR can fit into rehearsal, recording, and live-performance setups. Connect it between an instrument and a PA, amplifier, headphones, or compatible audio interface. ZOOM Guitar Lab software can be used through USB to manage patches and edit or add effects.

Key Features

  • Acoustic Instrument Effects: Includes effects tailored for acoustic guitar, saxophone, trumpet, violin, harmonica, and acoustic bass.
  • Five-Effect Signal Chain: Run up to five effects at once and arrange their order within a patch.
  • Acoustic Guitar Modeling: Uses AG MODEL processing and selectable pickup settings for acoustic-guitar tone shaping.
  • Built-In Looper: Records up to 30 seconds or 64 beats for layered practice and performance parts.
  • 68 Rhythm Patterns: Provides accompaniment patterns for unplugged styles, including varied time signatures.
  • Included MAA-1 Mic Amp: Adds an XLR microphone input with adjustable gain and optional 48V phantom power.

Design & Installation

The A1 FOUR uses a compact floor-pedal layout with a 128 x 32 dot-matrix LCD, control knobs, footswitches, and clearly separated input, output, USB, and power connections. ZOOM does not publish an enclosure-material specification for this model. The pedal measures 156 mm deep by 130 mm wide by 42 mm high and weighs 340 g without batteries.

Connect a pickup-equipped instrument to the standard mono INPUT jack, then connect the combined OUTPUT jack to a PA system, amplifier, headphones, or compatible interface. Instruments without pickups can be miked through the included MAA-1 mic amp, which connects to the pedal's input. The A1 FOUR can operate from four AA batteries, USB bus power, or a ZOOM AD-16 9V DC adapter; use the AUX IN jack for an external playback source, noting that AUX audio bypasses the pedal's built-in effects.
