The capsule's mid microphone uses a supercardioid polar pattern to focus on sound in front of the recorder. Its side microphone captures the lateral information needed to create a stereo image. By adjusting the recorder's side-mic level, users can set a tighter, more focused image or introduce a wider sense of space.

For a straightforward dialogue setup, the side level can be muted so the SSH-6e operates as a mono shotgun microphone. When recording in Raw Mid-Side mode, the stereo width can instead be adjusted later in a DAW with Zoom's MS Decoder software. This gives field recordists flexibility to make stereo decisions during recording or in post-production.

The SSH-6e uses Zoom Capsule System 3.0, the connection platform designed for the H6essential, H5studio, and H6studio recorders. With a compatible recorder that supports 32-bit float recording, the system is ready to capture a broad range of sound levels without manual input-gain adjustment. Firmware requirements apply for each compatible recorder model.
