The RØDE NTK is a large-diaphragm valve condenser microphone for studio recording applications that call for detailed capture and a controlled cardioid pickup pattern. It is designed for recording sources such as vocals, acoustic instruments, piano, guitar amplifiers, and drum overheads. Its dedicated external power supply supports the tube-based microphone circuitry.

A 1-inch gold-sputtered condenser capsule and hand-selected 6922 twin-triode valve are at the center of the NTK design. This combination is intended to deliver a warm, full recording character while retaining detail across its 20Hz to 20kHz frequency range. The fixed cardioid pattern helps focus pickup toward the intended source while reducing sound arriving from behind the microphone.

The NTK is suited to creators, musicians, engineers, and studios building an XLR-based recording chain. Its 25mV/Pa sensitivity and low 12dBA equivalent noise level support capture of nuanced vocal and instrument performances. With a maximum SPL rating above 158dB, it can also accommodate high-level sound sources when positioned and gain-staged appropriately.

Class-A valve circuitry uses a valve/tube impedance converter with a bipolar output buffer. The microphone connects to its dedicated power supply through a 7-pin cable, while the power supply feeds a mixer or microphone preamplifier through XLR. This separates the microphone from mains power hardware and provides a practical interface for conventional studio equipment.

The NTK can serve as a primary vocal microphone or as a character-focused option alongside other studio condensers. Its included external power supply integrates with a mixer, preamp, or audio interface that accepts an XLR microphone signal. For vocal work, a pop filter and stable stand setup help manage plosives, moisture, and placement consistency.

Design & Installation

The NTK uses a side-address body with a high-strength, heat-treated steel mesh head. Its internal design combines a pressure-gradient condenser capsule, Class-A valve circuitry, and a hand-selected 6922 tube. The microphone measures 208 x 55 x 55mm and has a net weight of 760g.

Connect the microphone to the dedicated power supply with the supplied 7-pin microphone cable before connecting the power supply to mains power. Run an XLR microphone cable from the power supply output to a mixer, preamplifier, or audio interface, and secure the microphone on a stable stand using the supplied mount or shock mount. Position the gold dot toward the source, and use a pop filter for vocal recording; do not disconnect the microphone cable while the system is powered.
