Mogami GOLD STAGE-50 50 Ft XLR Microphone Cable $194.95
Bundle total: $753.95

The Rode NTG3 is a broadcast-grade shotgun condenser microphone for film, television, video production, location recording, and voice-over work. Its tightly controlled supercardioid pickup pattern helps focus on the intended sound source while reducing unwanted ambient sound. It is a practical choice for crews that need a professional XLR microphone for cameras, field recorders, and audio mixers.

Designed for demanding outdoor and location work, the NTG3 uses externally RF-biased condenser electronics for strong resistance to moisture and condensation. This helps address reliability concerns that can affect conventional condenser microphones in changing weather and humid environments. The microphone also uses a custom XLR connector designed to reduce susceptibility to radio-frequency interference.

The NTG3 delivers a 40 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range, 13 dBA equivalent noise, and a 117 dB dynamic range. Its stated 130 dB maximum SPL handling supports use around dialogue, effects, and louder production environments. Rode describes its sound character as rich and warm, with controlled off-axis response.

At 255 mm long and 163 g, the NTG3 is sized for boom, stand, camera, and handheld microphone setups where directional reach is needed without a large microphone body. Its end-address design makes aiming straightforward: point the front of the microphone toward the desired source. The included foam windshield is intended for outdoor use when light wind protection is needed.

The NTG3 connects through a balanced 3-pin XLR output and requires 48V phantom power. It can be integrated with professional cameras, audio recorders, mixing consoles, or compatible wireless transmitters that can supply the required power. The package includes an RM5 microphone clip, windshield, padded zip pouch, and a protective aluminum storage cylinder for transport and storage.

Key Features

  • RF-Bias Electronics: Helps resist moisture and condensation in demanding recording conditions.
  • Supercardioid Pattern: Focuses pickup toward the subject while reducing surrounding sound.
  • Low Self-Noise: 13 dBA equivalent noise supports clean source capture.
  • Balanced XLR Output: Connects to professional cameras, mixers, and recorders.
  • 48V Phantom Power: Uses standard P48 power from compatible professional equipment.
  • Included Protective Accessories: Includes windshield, clip, pouch, and storage cylinder.

Design & Installation

The NTG3 has a slim 19 mm diameter body with a satin-nickel finish for the silver version. It uses a line-gradient acoustic design, a 0.50-inch capsule, and end-address orientation. The included aluminum storage cylinder is water-resistant and designed to protect the microphone during storage and travel.

Connect the microphone to a balanced XLR input that supplies 48V phantom power at a minimum of 5 mA. Mount it with the included RM5 clip or a compatible shock mount, taking care not to block the slots along the microphone body because doing so can affect its sound and directional pattern. Use the included windshield outdoors, and consider a more specialized windshield or suspension system for stronger wind or handling-noise control.
