RØDE NT2-A Multi-Pattern Studio Condenser Microphone
$335.20
Mogami GOLD STUDIO-25 25' XLR Microphone Cable
$119.95
The RØDE NT2-A is a wired large-diaphragm condenser microphone for studio recording. It is designed for creators who need one microphone to cover vocals, instruments, voice work, and room recording setups. Its selectable pickup patterns help adapt the microphone to the source and recording environment.
A 1-inch gold-sputtered dual-diaphragm capsule captures a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range. The microphone has a 7 dBA equivalent noise level and a sensitivity of 16 mV at 94 dB SPL, supporting detailed recording with low self-noise. Its side-address format makes it suitable for conventional studio-mic positioning.
The NT2-A provides cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8 polar patterns from controls on the microphone body. Cardioid is useful when focusing on a source in front of the microphone, omnidirectional captures sound around it, and figure-8 picks up from the front and rear. This flexibility supports solo recording, room capture, and two-person face-to-face setups.
Selectable 40 Hz and 80 Hz high-pass filters help reduce low-frequency rumble when needed. A three-position pad offers 0 dB, -5 dB, and -10 dB settings for working with louder sources. The microphone handles up to 147 dB SPL normally and up to 157 dB SPL with the maximum pad setting.
JFET impedance-converter electronics with a bipolar output buffer feed a balanced XLR output. The NT2-A is intended for use with an XLR microphone preamp, audio interface, mixer, or recorder that provides compatible phantom power. It includes an SM6 shock mount and XLR cable, providing a practical foundation for a studio microphone setup.
Key Features
- 1-Inch HF1 Capsule: Gold-sputtered dual-diaphragm design supports full-range studio recording.
- Three Polar Patterns: Choose cardioid, omnidirectional, or figure-8 pickup on the microphone.
- High-Pass Filter: Flat, 40 Hz, and 80 Hz settings help manage low-frequency rumble.
- Selectable Pad: 0 dB, -5 dB, and -10 dB options accommodate louder sources.
- Low Self-Noise: The 7 dBA equivalent noise rating suits detailed recording work.
- Balanced XLR Output: Connects to compatible microphone preamps, mixers, and audio interfaces.
Design & Installation
The NT2-A uses a silver side-address body with an internally shock-mounted capsule. Its transformerless surface-mount circuitry uses a JFET impedance converter with a bipolar output buffer. The microphone measures 209 mm long by 55 mm in diameter and weighs 860 g.
Mount the microphone in the included SM6 shock mount on a stable microphone stand or studio arm, then connect the included XLR cable to a compatible preamp, mixer, recorder, or audio interface. Enable P24 or P48 phantom power from the connected device before use. Select the polar pattern, high-pass filter, and pad according to the source, room, and recording level.

Does the NT2-A connect directly to a computer by USB?
No. The NT2-A has a balanced XLR output, not a USB connection. Use it with an audio interface, mixer, recorder, or microphone preamp with an XLR input.
Does this microphone require phantom power?
Yes. The NT2-A requires P24 or P48 phantom power from the connected microphone input. Confirm that the connected interface, mixer, or preamp can supply compatible phantom power.
Which pickup patterns are available?
The microphone has cardioid, omnidirectional, and figure-8 polar patterns. The three-position pattern control is located on the microphone body.
Can the NT2-A handle loud instruments?
It is rated for a maximum SPL of 147 dB SPL. With the pad set to its maximum -10 dB position, maximum SPL is rated at 157 dB SPL.
What is included with the NT2-A?
The package includes the NT2-A silver microphone, an SM6 studio microphone shock mount, and an XLR cable. A compatible phantom-powered XLR microphone input is still required for operation.
How can I reduce rumble or overload during recording?
Use the onboard high-pass filter at 40 Hz or 80 Hz to reduce unwanted low-frequency content. Use the -5 dB or -10 dB pad setting when recording louder sources.
