RØDE K2 Multi-Pattern Valve Condenser Microphone
$699.00
Mogami GOLD STUDIO-50 50' XLR Microphone Cable
$186.95
The RØDE K2 is a large-diaphragm valve condenser microphone built for detailed studio recording. It gives vocalists, musicians, producers, and engineers a flexible microphone option for capturing voices and acoustic instruments. Its side-address format and external power supply make it suited to a dedicated recording setup.
A 1-inch gold-sputtered condenser capsule and hand-selected 6922 twin-triode valve form the core of the K2 design. The microphone is engineered to provide a rich, warm character while retaining the detail expected from a condenser microphone. Its low equivalent-noise rating also supports recording quieter sources and more nuanced performances.
The K2 uses a continuously variable polar-pattern control rather than a limited fixed-pattern switch. It can move from omnidirectional through cardioid to figure-8, allowing the pickup behavior to be matched to the room, source, and recording technique. Cardioid is useful for focusing on a source from the front, while omni and figure-8 expand the options for ambience, interviews, and stereo techniques.
With a 20Hz to 20kHz frequency range, 162dB SPL maximum handling, and 150dB dynamic range, the K2 is specified for a wide variety of recording levels. It connects through its dedicated power supply, which provides a balanced XLR output to a mixer, microphone preamp, or audio interface. The power supply also houses the polar-pattern control, ground-lift switch, and mains-voltage selector.
The K2 fits naturally into a studio system with a stable microphone stand, an XLR-equipped preamp or interface, and appropriate acoustic treatment. A shock mount is supplied, while a pop filter is recommended for vocal work to help reduce plosive sounds. The microphone includes a dedicated PSU arrangement instead of relying on standard 48V phantom power.
Key Features
- 1-Inch Gold-Sputtered Capsule: Large-diaphragm condenser design for detailed source capture.
- 6922 Twin-Triode Valve: Hand-selected tube supports the K2's valve microphone circuit.
- Variable Polar Pattern: Adjust from omni through cardioid to figure-8 at the PSU.
- Low Self-Noise: 10dBA equivalent noise supports quieter recording environments.
- High SPL Handling: Handles up to 162dB SPL for demanding sound sources.
- Dedicated Power Supply: Provides microphone power, pattern control, and balanced XLR output.
Design & Installation
The K2 uses a side-address body with a 1-inch condenser capsule, valve impedance-converter electronics, and a satin nickel finish. Its Class-A valve circuitry uses a hand-selected and graded 6922 twin-triode valve. The microphone measures 208 x 55 x 55mm and has a net weight of 815g.
Mount the K2 securely on a stable microphone stand using the supplied shock mount, with the gold dot facing the sound source. Connect the microphone to its dedicated power supply with the supplied 7-pin cable, then connect the PSU's XLR output to a mixer, preamp, or audio interface. Set the PSU to the correct local mains voltage before use, allow the microphone a minute or two to stabilize, and use a pop filter for vocal recording.

Does the K2 need phantom power?
No. The K2 operates from its dedicated external power supply rather than standard phantom power. RØDE states that phantom power will not damage the PSU, but recommends switching it off where possible.
What equipment do I need to connect the K2?
You need a stable microphone stand and an XLR-equipped mixer, microphone preamp, or audio interface. The microphone connects to its PSU with a 7-pin cable, and the PSU connects to your recording equipment through XLR.
Which polar patterns does the K2 offer?
The K2 adjusts continuously from omnidirectional through cardioid to figure-8. The polar-pattern dial is located on the front of the dedicated power supply.
What is included with the microphone?
The K2 is supplied with a dedicated power supply and shock mount. The product documentation also lists the K2 microphone cable and power cable as supplied accessories.
Can I replace the valve myself?
RØDE strongly recommends using an authorized service center for valve replacement. If attempted independently, the microphone must be unpowered and proper precautions must be taken around the circuitry.
How does the warranty work?
The microphone carries a one-year warranty from the purchase date. Online registration extends the coverage to a full 10 years, subject to RØDE warranty terms.
