Rode NT6 Compact Condenser Microphone with Remote Capsule

The Rode NT6 is a compact small-diaphragm condenser microphone designed for close, discreet, and difficult-to-reach microphone placement. Its remote capsule separates the recording head from the preamp body, helping users position the capsule where a conventional microphone body may not fit. It is suited to instrument recording, location work, broadcast, theatre, live performance, and environmental recording.

A fixed cardioid pickup pattern focuses capture toward the intended source while reducing pickup from the sides and rear. The NT6 covers a 40Hz to 20kHz frequency range and uses a 1/2-inch externally biased, gold-sputtered condenser capsule. Its compact capsule supports detailed close-miking without placing a full microphone body directly at the recording position.

The capsule connects to the remote preamp body with a 3m shielded, Kevlar-reinforced cable. This split design allows the capsule to remain in a tight or visually unobtrusive location while the preamp controls stay accessible elsewhere. A multi-position mounting ring provides 180 degrees of vertical capsule adjustment for accurate aiming.

The preamp body includes a selectable 80Hz high-pass filter and a -10dB pad. The high-pass filter can help reduce low-frequency rumble and vibration when those frequencies are not part of the desired source. The pad adds headroom for louder instruments and sound sources, raising maximum SPL handling to 145dB with the pad enabled.

The NT6 uses a balanced 3-pin XLR output and requires 24V or 48V phantom power from a compatible mixer, audio interface, recorder, or microphone preamp. Its RM5 stand mount, WS5 windshield, and padded pouch support practical studio and field deployment. It can serve as a compact standalone microphone or as a focused component within a larger recording setup.

Design & Installation

The NT6 uses an externally biased, gold-sputtered condenser capsule and a heavy-duty satin-nickel plated preamp body. Its surface-mount preamp circuitry is housed separately from the capsule, while the included capsule mounting ring provides two-axis adjustment and 180 degrees of vertical rotation. The capsule assembly supports 1/4-inch mounting and includes adapters for common microphone stand, tripod, and boompole thread sizes.

Mount the capsule close to the desired source using the swivel mount, then route the supplied 3m cable to the preamp body and secure the body with the included RM5 stand mount as needed. Connect a standard balanced XLR microphone cable from the preamp body to a mixer, recorder, or interface that provides 24V or 48V phantom power. Set the high-pass filter or pad before recording, and ensure miniature cable connectors are aligned correctly before inserting them.
