The Shure BETA87A is a wired handheld electret condenser microphone designed for lead and background vocals. Its supercardioid pickup pattern focuses on the performer while helping reduce unwanted off-axis sound. It is suited to live sound reinforcement and studio recording applications.

A smooth 50 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response with a gradual presence rise is tailored for clear vocal reproduction. The microphone also uses a controlled low-frequency roll-off to help manage proximity effect during close vocal work. This makes it practical for singers who work close to the grille on stage or in recording setups.

The BETA87A handles high sound-pressure levels, with a maximum SPL rating of 140.5 dB under Shure's specified test conditions. Its 117 dB dynamic range and low self-noise support detailed vocal capture across quiet passages and louder performances. The balanced XLR output is intended for professional mixers, interfaces, and microphone preamps.

An advanced cartridge shock-mount system helps reduce mechanical shock and handling noise. The integrated pop filter helps limit wind and breath noise without requiring an external filter for routine vocal use. Its supercardioid pattern can also help increase usable gain before feedback when loudspeakers are placed appropriately.

The microphone requires 11 to 52 V DC phantom power and performs best with a 48 V DC supply. It connects through a balanced XLR-to-XLR or XLR-to-TRS microphone cable, depending on the input equipment. An A25D microphone clip and zippered carrying bag are included for stand mounting, storage, and transport.

Design & Installation

The BETA87A uses an aluminum housing with a painted blue metallic finish. Its hardened steel grille has nickel satin chrome plating, and the microphone has a net weight of 0.207 kg (0.475 lb). The design combines a handheld vocal form factor with an internal cartridge shock mount and built-in pop filter.

Connect the microphone's male three-pin balanced XLR output to a compatible balanced microphone input using an XLR-to-XLR or XLR-to-TRS cable. Enable phantom power from 11 to 52 V DC, with 48 V DC preferred for full specified performance. For stage use, mount it in the included A25D clip and place monitor speakers toward the microphone's rear 120-degree rejection points rather than directly behind it.
