The sE Electronics sE8(P) is a factory-matched pair of small-diaphragm, cardioid true-condenser microphones for stereo recording and live sound reinforcement. It is designed for engineers and performers who need two closely matched microphones for techniques such as X/Y, ORTF, spaced pair, drum overhead, piano, choir, and ensemble capture. Each microphone uses a balanced, detailed presentation intended to reproduce acoustic sources with minimal coloration.

This matched-pair set is well suited to acoustic guitar, piano, strings, woodwinds, percussion, cymbals, and drum overhead applications. Its cardioid pickup pattern helps focus on the intended source while reducing pickup from the rear. The pair is hand-selected by sE Electronics for closely consistent microphone-to-microphone performance in stereo use.

Each sE8 uses a handcrafted 1/2-inch true-condenser capsule with an ultra-thin, gold-sputtered diaphragm. The capsule design is paired with transformerless Class-A circuitry and a stated 13 dB(A) equivalent noise level. This combination supports detailed transient capture and a wide dynamic range for both subtle and high-volume sources.

Selectable -10 dB and -20 dB attenuation pads let the microphones handle louder close-miked instruments, including snare drums and brass. Switchable 80 Hz and 160 Hz low-cut filters help reduce rumble, footfall noise, wind noise, and excess low-frequency buildup from close placement. These onboard controls allow each microphone to be adapted to the source before recording or mixing.

The sE8(P) package provides a practical starting point for a stereo microphone setup without requiring separate matching or accessory purchases. Two windscreens, two mic clips with thread adapters, a precision stereo mounting bar, and a metal flight case are included. The microphones require two balanced XLR inputs with 48V phantom power from a mixer, audio interface, microphone preamp, or external phantom-power supply.

Design & Installation

Each sE8 has an all-metal housing, a gold-plated 3-pin male XLR connector, and a compact pencil-style form factor measuring 23 mm in diameter and 120 mm long. The capsule is handcrafted and individually tuned, while the transformerless Class-A electronics are designed for balanced condenser-microphone operation. Each microphone weighs 141 g, making the pair suitable for standard microphone stands, stereo bars, and boom mounting.

Connect each microphone to a separate balanced XLR microphone input and enable 48V phantom power on both channels. Use the included clips and stereo mounting bar for coincident stereo placement, or mount the microphones separately for spaced-pair applications. Start with the pad and low-cut switches disengaged, then add attenuation for loud sources or engage a low-cut setting when rumble, handling noise, or proximity effect needs to be reduced.
