The sE Electronics sE8 is a cardioid small-diaphragm true condenser microphone for detailed studio recording and live sound reinforcement. It is designed for acoustic guitar, piano, strings, woodwinds, percussion, cymbals, drum overheads, and other sources where articulation and transient response matter. Its compact pencil-style format makes it practical for close placement in tight microphone positions.

The sE8 is intended for musicians, engineers, and venues that need a versatile condenser microphone with a balanced, controlled sound character. Its hand-crafted 1/2-inch capsule and precision backplate design are made to support a natural response with consistent off-axis pickup. Transformerless Class-A electronics support a clean signal path with low self-noise and strong dynamic-range performance. The microphone is rated for 13 dB(A) equivalent noise and up to 159 dB SPL when its -20 dB pad is engaged. Those specifications make it suitable for both quieter acoustic material and high-level sources such as snare, brass, and guitar cabinets.

Two switchable attenuation pads and two low-cut filter settings provide practical control at the microphone. The -10 dB and -20 dB pads help prevent overload on loud sources, while the 80 Hz and 160 Hz filters can reduce rumble, footfall noise, wind noise, and excess proximity-effect bass. These controls allow the sE8 to adapt to a range of placement distances and recording environments.

The sE8 connects by standard 3-pin XLR and requires 48V phantom power from a compatible audio interface, mixer, or external phantom-power supply. Its all-metal body and gold-plated XLR connector are suited to regular studio and stage use. For expanded flexibility, it is compatible with the optional sE8 omni capsule, while matched-pair versions are available for stereo recording applications.

Design & Installation

The sE8 uses an all-metal chassis, a hand-crafted gold-sputtered condenser capsule, and a gold-plated 3-pin XLR connector. Its body measures 23 mm in diameter by 120 mm long and weighs 141 g. The single-microphone package includes a mic clip with thread adapter and a windscreen.

Mount the sE8 in its included clip on a suitable microphone stand, then connect it to a balanced XLR microphone input that supplies 48V phantom power. Use the pad for close-miking high-SPL instruments or when protecting an interface or mixer input from overload. Select the low-cut filter when rumble, wind noise, footfall noise, or close-placement bass buildup is present.
