sE Electronics RN17(P) Matched Pair Condenser Microphones
$2,199.00
Mogami PLATINUM STUDIO 50 50-Foot XLR Microphone Cable
$259.95
The sE Electronics RN17(P) is a factory-matched stereo pair of small-diaphragm condenser microphones designed for detailed instrument, ensemble, and ambient recording. Each microphone ships with a cardioid capsule and is engineered for stereo applications where close tonal consistency between microphones matters. The pair is suited to acoustic guitar, piano, strings, choir, woodwinds, percussion, drum overheads, and room capture.
The RN17 combines a compact capsule with a large custom output transformer, addressing the lean low-frequency character sometimes associated with small-diaphragm microphones. Its cardioid pickup pattern helps focus on the intended source while reducing sound arriving from the rear. With a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range and 131 dB maximum SPL handling, it can cover delicate acoustic sources as well as louder instruments.
Developed as part of the sE Electronics and Rupert Neve collaboration, the RN17 uses Class-A electronics and a custom-designed transformer. The microphone's 15 mm gold-sputtered diaphragm is intended to respond quickly to transients and fine high-frequency detail. Its stated sound character balances detailed mids and highs with full, accurate low-end response.
This RN17(P) package is factory matched as a stereo pair, with the transformers and cardioid capsules matched for close tolerance. That makes it practical for coincident, near-coincident, spaced-pair, and overhead recording techniques. A precision stereo mounting bar is included to position both microphones from a single stand.
Each RN17 requires standard 48 V phantom power from a compatible microphone preamp, mixer, audio interface, or recorder. The microphones connect using standard 3-pin XLR microphone cables. An optional omnidirectional capsule is available separately for users who need a more open pickup pattern for room, ensemble, or ambient recording.
Key Features
- Factory-Matched Stereo Pair: Transformers and cardioid capsules are matched for closely aligned stereo recording performance.
- 15 mm Gold-Sputtered Diaphragm: The compact diaphragm supports fast transient response and detailed capture.
- Custom Output Transformer: A full-scale Rupert Neve-designed transformer supports balanced frequency response and headroom.
- Cardioid Capsule Included: Focuses on the source while reducing pickup from the rear of each microphone.
- Optional Omni Capsule Support: Expand the system with separately available omnidirectional RN17 capsules.
- Complete Stereo Accessories: Includes two shock mounts, a stereo bar, presentation case, and flight case.
Design & Installation
The RN17 uses a hand-crafted 2/3-inch true-condenser capsule, Class-A electronics, and a matte black finish intended to remain visually unobtrusive on stage or in the studio. Each microphone measures 200 mm long and weighs 320 g. The included custom shock mounts help isolate the microphones from stand-borne vibration and handling noise.
Connect each RN17 to a separate balanced XLR microphone input and enable 48 V phantom power only on compatible equipment. Use the included stereo mounting bar for paired configurations; its microphone-mount spacing adjusts from 58 mm to 276 mm. The supplied thread adapters allow the shock mounts and stereo bar to be fitted to compatible microphone stands.
