The Rockford Fosgate R2D2-10 is a 10-inch Prime Series subwoofer designed to add dedicated low-frequency output to an aftermarket car audio system. Its dual 2-ohm voice coils provide wiring flexibility for matching an amplifier's supported load. With 250 watts RMS power handling, it is suited to systems built around moderate-power mono amplification.

This subwoofer is intended for listeners who want fuller bass response without moving to a larger 12-inch driver. It can be used in either a sealed or vented enclosure, allowing the installation to be tailored to available space and listening priorities. A sealed box supports a compact, controlled setup, while a properly designed vented box increases output around its tuning frequency.

The R2D2-10 uses a mica-injected polypropylene cone and poly-foam surround to support consistent cone movement during bass playback. Its 4-layer high-temperature copper voice coil is wound on an aluminum former. The driver is specified for a 45-250 Hz frequency response and has 6.5 mm of linear excursion.

Its StampCast steel basket incorporates spider venting, while the motor uses an extended pole and bumped vented backplate. These design elements help manage heat and support the moving assembly. Stitched flexible lead wires are used to reduce strain at the spider connection.

The dual 2-ohm voice-coil configuration can be wired in series for a 4-ohm final load or in parallel for a 1-ohm final load when using one subwoofer. Select an amplifier that is stable at the intended final impedance and provides power appropriate for the 250-watt RMS rating. This makes the R2D2-10 a practical foundation for a single-subwoofer system or a matched multi-subwoofer installation.

Design & Installation

The R2D2-10 combines a mica-injected polypropylene cone, high-density poly-foam surround, poly-cotton spider, and heavy-gauge stamped steel frame. It uses a high-temperature copper voice coil with an aluminum former, all-metal compression terminals, and a removable PVC motor cover. The double-stacked ferrite magnet motor structure is rated with a 43-ounce magnet weight.

Allow for a 9.13-inch mounting cutout and 4.33-inch mounting depth when planning the enclosure. Rockford Fosgate lists a 0.59-cubic-foot optimum sealed enclosure and a 1.40-cubic-foot optimum vented enclosure tuned to 43 Hz. For vented use, the manufacturer recommends a subsonic or infrasonic filter; an active 80-100 Hz low-pass crossover at 12 dB per octave is also recommended for subwoofer integration.
