KRK S10.4 10" Powered Studio Subwoofer

The KRK S10.4 is a powered 10-inch studio subwoofer designed to extend the low-frequency range of compatible studio monitor systems. It helps producers, engineers, DJs, and content creators hear bass information that smaller nearfield monitors may not reproduce fully. Its active design includes built-in amplification, so no separate subwoofer amplifier is required.

A 10-inch glass aramid composite woofer handles the low end, supported by a front-loaded, vented cabinet design. The system is specified for a 30 Hz to 110 Hz frequency response and up to 117.2 dB maximum peak SPL. This makes it suitable for checking kick drums, bass instruments, low-frequency effects, and overall mix balance in a studio environment.

The S10.4 uses a 160-watt Class D amplifier rated at 1% THD+N at 44 Hz. Class D amplification keeps the powered section efficient while supplying controlled low-frequency output. The subwoofer includes a level control, selectable polarity, input-sensitivity settings, and a four-position crossover control for integration with different monitor sizes.

Connection flexibility is a central part of the design. Balanced XLR and 1/4-inch TRS inputs and outputs support professional audio interfaces, mixers, and monitor controllers, while RCA connections accommodate unbalanced consumer-audio sources. Outputs are high-passed above the selected crossover point when the subwoofer is active, helping divide bass duties between the subwoofer and connected monitors.

An optional momentary footswitch can bypass the subwoofer and high-pass filter for fast full-range monitor comparisons. This is useful when checking how a mix translates with and without added low-frequency extension. The S10.4 can serve as the low-frequency foundation of a 2.1 monitoring setup or as part of a larger studio monitoring system.

Design & Installation

The S10.4 uses a front-loaded, vented enclosure constructed from 15 mm and 18 mm reinforced MDF. Its cabinet has a black vinyl wrap with a black-painted baffle, while the front bass port supports flexible placement in studio rooms. An EVA isolation pad is included as part of the hardware specification, and an optional perforated-steel grille is available.

Connect the output of an audio interface, mixer, or monitor controller to the subwoofer using XLR, 1/4-inch TRS, or RCA connections, then route the corresponding outputs to a pair of powered monitors. Start with the subwoofer volume at minimum, choose a crossover point appropriate for the monitor size and room, and adjust level and polarity for a balanced response at the listening position. Keep ventilation openings clear and use the supplied IEC power cord with a grounded AC outlet.
