Hertz MLK165-3 6.5" Two-Way Component Speakers

The Hertz MLK165-3, identified by Hertz as the MLK 165.3 Legend, is a 6.5-inch two-way component speaker system for upgrading a vehicle’s front-stage sound. It combines separate woofers, tweeters, and passive crossovers rather than using a single coaxial speaker. This layout allows the high-frequency drivers to be mounted independently for a more tailored installation.

The system is rated for 150 watts continuous power handling and 300 watts peak at 4 ohms. Its stated 40 Hz to 25 kHz frequency response supports a broad range from low midbass through upper treble. It is intended for installations using compatible speaker-channel amplification or a suitable factory or aftermarket audio source.

The ML 165.3 woofer uses a cotton-injected paper cone with an exponential V-cone profile and a Boundary Free IIR rubber surround. Its 36 mm CCAW double-layer voice coil is wound on a Kapton former, while the high-density flux ferrite motor is designed for the woofer’s midrange operation. A three-spoke aluminum-alloy basket with integrated venting supports the driver structure.

The ML 28.3 tweeter uses a 35 mm Tetolon fiber dome and a double-neodymium magnet assembly. Hertz specifies FEA-optimized dome geometry and a larger rear chamber, with a listed tweeter resonant frequency of 900 Hz. These design elements support controlled high-frequency output and installation flexibility in component-system layouts.

The included MLCX 165.3 passive crossover divides the system at 3.5 kHz with a 12 dB-per-octave low-pass/high-pass network. Its three tweeter-level terminals provide +2 dB, 0 dB, and -2 dB settings, and the Hi-Contour switch changes the tweeter high-pass behavior for different tweeter positions and angles. This makes the set suited to custom door-and-dash, door-and-sail-panel, or similar component-speaker upgrades.

Design & Installation

The ML 165.3 woofer uses a high-density flux ferrite magnet, CCAW voice coil on a Kapton former, cotton-injected paper cone, and vented three-spoke aluminum-alloy basket. The ML 28.3 tweeter combines a Tetolon fiber dome, natural-fiber non-woven damping material, and a double-neodymium magnet assembly. A die-cast aluminum grille with a diamond-cut Hertz logo is included.

Verify vehicle-specific mounting clearance, speaker-opening diameter, and tweeter mounting options before installation. Wire each woofer and tweeter through its supplied MLCX 165.3 passive crossover, observing polarity and selecting the appropriate tweeter-level terminal. Use the Hi-Contour control and the +2/0/-2 dB tweeter setting to help accommodate the tweeter’s final location and listening angle.
