The BOSS VB-2W is an all-analog vibrato pedal for electric guitar players who want expressive pitch modulation without changing the core character of their instrument. It recreates the sound and operating feel of the original BOSS VB-2 while adding a Custom voicing for expanded tonal range. The compact pedal format makes it practical for pedalboards, studio rigs, and direct-to-amp setups.

Vibrato works by varying pitch rather than blending in a dry signal like a chorus effect, creating movement that can range from subtle shimmer to more pronounced warble. The VB-2W provides RATE and DEPTH controls to set modulation speed and intensity. A RISE TIME control lets the effect fade in gradually for softer transitions and more expressive phrasing.

Standard mode is designed to reproduce the original VB-2 vibrato sound. Custom mode adds a different tonal character with emphasized modulation and a changing frequency response. This gives players two distinct analog vibrato voices in one pedal while keeping operation direct and familiar.

The pedal uses an analog BBD, or bucket-brigade device, vibrato line. Its three MODE settings support conventional latched switching, momentary unlatch operation, and bypass behavior. These choices make the VB-2W useful for sustained modulation as well as brief, manually controlled vibrato accents.

The VB-2W fits naturally before an amplifier or within a guitar effects chain. Its buffered bypass is intended for dependable signal routing when the effect is not active. An optional compatible expression pedal can connect to the dedicated DEPTH jack for real-time control of modulation depth while playing.

Design & Installation

The VB-2W uses BOSS's compact stompbox format with a foot-operated pedal switch, top-panel control knobs, a Standard/Custom switch, and a CHECK indicator. The layout keeps RATE, DEPTH, RISE TIME, and MODE adjustments accessible while preserving a small pedalboard footprint. The CHECK indicator shows effect status and also serves as a battery-status indicator.

Connect a guitar or preceding effect to the INPUT jack and run the OUTPUT jack to an amplifier or subsequent effect. The pedal can operate from a 9V battery or an optional BOSS PSA-series AC adaptor; inserting a plug into the INPUT jack powers the unit when using battery power. For foot-controlled depth changes, use only a supported BOSS FV-500H, FV-500L, or Roland EV-5 expression pedal with the DEPTH jack.
