RØDE NT1GEN5B 1-Inch USB/XLR Condenser Microphone

The RØDE NT1GEN5B is a large-diaphragm studio condenser microphone designed for vocal recording, instruments, voiceovers, podcasting, and home-studio production. Its Dual Connect design gives creators a choice between traditional analog XLR operation and direct USB-C recording to a computer. This flexibility helps simplify a first recording setup while keeping a path open for use with an audio interface or mixer.

Its 1-inch HF6 condenser capsule uses a cardioid pickup pattern that focuses on sound in front of the microphone while reducing pickup from behind it. The side-address design is intended for placing the front of the microphone, marked by its gold dot, toward the performer or sound source. With a 20Hz–20kHz frequency range, 4dBA equivalent noise rating, and 142 dB SPL maximum rating, it is equipped for quiet detail as well as loud sources.

When connected by XLR, the NT1GEN5B functions as an analog condenser microphone and requires 48V phantom power from a compatible preamp, mixer, or interface. The XLR output is a conventional 3-pin connection with 100-ohm output impedance. This mode is useful for studio systems that already have microphone preamps and balanced XLR inputs.

USB-C mode adds a built-in Revolution Preamp, digital conversion up to 192kHz, and 24-bit or 32-bit floating-point recording support. The microphone can connect directly to a compatible Mac or Windows computer without an external audio interface. Its onboard DSP supports APHEX processing tools including a compressor, noise gate, high-pass filter, Aural Exciter, and Big Bottom when used at 48kHz.

The NT1GEN5B includes the SM6 shock mount with pop filter, a 3m USB-C cable, a 6m XLR cable, and a dust cover. The shock mount helps reduce vibration and handling noise, while the adjustable pop filter helps control vocal plosives. It is a practical choice for creators who want one microphone that can work in a direct-to-computer setup today and in an XLR-based studio system later.

Design & Installation

The NT1GEN5B has a rugged aluminum body with a black high-grade finish. Its HF6 capsule is internally shock-mounted to help reduce external vibration reaching the capsule. The microphone measures 189mm high by 52mm wide and 52mm deep, with a weight of 308g.

Mount the microphone in the included SM6 shock mount on a compatible microphone stand or studio arm; the mount supports 3/8-inch and 5/8-inch threads. Point the gold dot toward the performer and place the pop filter between the source and capsule for vocal work. Connect by XLR to equipment providing 48V phantom power, or use the included USB-C cable for direct computer recording; XLR and USB cannot be used simultaneously.
