The Mackie EM-Carbon is a USB condenser microphone designed for recording, streaming, podcasting, voiceovers, interviews, and music creation. It connects directly to a computer through USB-C, avoiding the need for a separate audio interface for basic recording setups. Its included desktop stand and plug-and-play operation make it suitable for creators building a practical desktop recording system.

This side-address microphone uses a 14 mm condenser capsule and supports a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response. It is suited to capturing spoken voice, vocals, instruments, and room sound with a detailed full-range presentation. The 126 dB maximum input SPL also gives it capacity for louder sound sources when gain is set appropriately.

Five selectable polar patterns let the EM-Carbon adapt to different recording situations. Cardioid is useful for a single speaker or vocalist, while bidirectional can serve two-person interviews from opposite sides of the microphone. Stereo, super-cardioid, and omnidirectional modes broaden its use for instruments, field capture, group discussions, and ambient recording.

Onyx microphone preamp circuitry and 16-bit/48 kHz digital audio conversion provide the microphone's USB recording path. Front-panel gain, mute, and headphone-volume controls keep key adjustments within reach. The dedicated headphone output allows direct monitoring from the microphone while also playing computer audio.

The EM-Carbon fits naturally into a computer-based content-creation setup and can be used on its included stand or a standard microphone stand. It includes a USB-C cable with a USB-A computer connection, helping simplify initial setup. Mackie also includes Waveform OEM software and the DAW Essentials plugin bundle for users starting a recording workflow.

Key Features

  • Five Polar Patterns: Select stereo, cardioid, figure-8, super-cardioid, or omnidirectional pickup for different sources and recording layouts.
  • 14 mm Condenser Capsule: Captures voice, instruments, and other detailed sound sources across a 20 Hz to 20 kHz response range.
  • USB-C Connectivity: Connects directly to a compatible computer with a class-compliant, driver-free USB audio connection.
  • Onyx Preamp Circuitry: Provides the microphone's integrated low-noise recording signal path.
  • Headphone Monitoring: Use the 1/8-inch stereo headphone jack and independent volume control for convenient listening.
  • Onboard Controls: Gain, mute, polar-pattern, and headphone-volume controls support quick adjustments while recording.

Design & Installation

The EM-Carbon has a black, side-address microphone design with an integrated standard microphone stand mount. Mackie describes its construction as rugged; the manufacturer does not specify a housing material composition. A red internal LED illuminates when the microphone mute switch is engaged.

For setup, connect the USB-C end of the included cable to the microphone and the USB-A end directly to an available computer USB port. Mackie advises connecting directly to the computer rather than through a USB hub or keyboard port. Position the microphone so the intended source addresses the side of the microphone, then select the polar pattern and adjust gain for the recording task.
