Memphis MEMBX Digital Bass Expander

The Memphis MEMBX is a digital bass expander designed to restore low-frequency impact that can be reduced in compressed music playback. It processes the incoming audio signal before it reaches the next component in the system. The result is adjustable bass restoration for vehicles using compatible aftermarket or factory audio equipment.

This processor is intended for listeners who want more control over bass character without replacing their entire sound system. Its high- and low-level input capability supports integration with a range of source units. RCA outputs send the processed signal onward to an amplifier, equalizer, or crossover.

The MEMBX uses a bass driver circuit to recreate and inject low-frequency information into the signal path. A bass equalization circuit then contours the restored bass for the connected speaker system. Variable Sweep and Wide controls let the installer select the center frequency and the affected frequency range.

A wired, mountable remote is included for adjusting bass level from the listening position. The remote includes a subsonic-filter control and bass-level control, while its LED brightness changes with the selected bass level. On the main unit, Bass Maximizer indicators flash when the maximization circuit is active.

The MEMBX is designed as an in-line signal processor and should be placed before a crossover when one is used. Its balanced input circuit, grounding options, and ground-isolation jumpers support clean integration in a variety of vehicle audio systems. Internal bass-output jumpers allow the restoration circuit output to be tailored to system requirements.

Design & Installation

The MEMBX is a purpose-built signal processor with labeled input, output, remote, power, and adjustment connections. Memphis does not publish a chassis-material specification or overall dimensions in the available documentation. Its design includes external LEDs and controls, along with internal jumpers for input grounding, ground isolation, and bass-output configuration.

Install the MEMBX securely in a dry location and connect its RCA outputs to the next signal component, such as an equalizer, crossover, or amplifier. When a crossover is part of the system, install the MEMBX before it in the signal path. Connect B+, ground, and a 12VDC remote-turn-on lead correctly, use the included mountable remote, and set the amplifier gain only after the processor has been adjusted.
