Hifonics BRL1600.4 4-Channel Car Audio Amplifier

The Hifonics BRL1600.4 is a four-channel car audio amplifier designed to add substantial power and system flexibility to an aftermarket vehicle sound system. It can drive four speakers in stereo or operate as two bridged channels for compatible higher-power applications. This makes it suitable for users upgrading factory-amplified or head-unit-powered speakers with a dedicated external amplifier.

With rated output of 300 watts RMS per channel at 4 ohms and 450 watts RMS per channel at 2 ohms, the BRL1600.4 is intended for demanding full-range speaker systems. Its 2-ohm stereo stability gives installers options when matching speakers and wiring layouts. Two channels can also be bridged for 880 watts RMS per channel at 4 ohms.

The amplifier uses Hifonics Super D Class architecture and a half-bridge design intended to support efficient power delivery in a compact chassis. An iron-core transformer and ultra-low-EMI design help support integration in modern vehicle electrical environments. A mass-loaded extruded aluminum heat sink assists with thermal management during extended use.

Variable high-pass and low-pass crossovers each operate from 40 Hz to 2 kHz, allowing the amplifier to be tailored for full-range speakers, midbass drivers, or selected system configurations. Built-in bass control provides an additional adjustment option. The 0.2 to 9V input range supports connection with a range of compatible source-unit preamp outputs.

The BRL1600.4 includes an illuminated Hifonics logo with selectable constant-blue, VU-meter, or off modes. In VU-meter mode, the logo responds to audio level and can assist during gain adjustment. Triple protection circuitry monitors over/under-voltage, short-circuit, overcurrent, and thermal conditions to help protect the amplifier and connected system.

Design & Installation

The BRL1600.4 uses a black chassis with a mass-loaded extruded aluminum heat sink, multi-layer circuit boards, surface-mount components, nickel-plated RCA inputs, and molded connection terminals. Its terminals are angled to improve access and create a cleaner wire-routing profile. The amplifier measures 10.5 inches long, 5.75 inches wide, and 2.25 inches high.

Mount the amplifier securely in a dry, ventilated location with room around the heat sink for airflow. Use appropriately sized power, ground, speaker, and RCA wiring, and observe the amplifier's 2-ohm minimum stereo impedance and 4-ohm minimum bridged impedance. Its external 100A fuse requirement and 2 AWG power/ground terminals should be considered when planning the vehicle electrical installation.
