The Gretsch G9200 Boxcar is a six-string, round-neck resonator guitar designed for acoustic projection and the distinctive response of a spider-cone instrument. Its laminated mahogany body and internal sound-well construction create a traditional resonator platform without requiring electronics. It is a practical choice for players seeking a dedicated acoustic resonator for roots-oriented playing, ensemble work, or home practice.

The round-neck layout and Soft “V” mahogany neck support conventional fretted playing while also accommodating slide-oriented techniques. A 25-inch scale length, 1.75-inch bone nut, and 19 medium-jumbo frets provide a familiar full-size guitar format. The padauk fingerboard uses white-dot position markers for clear visual reference.

At the center of the G9200 is Gretsch’s Ampli-Sonic spider resonator cone and bridge system. The cone is hand-spun in Eastern Europe from nearly 99% pure aluminum, and it works with the ebony-tipped maple spider bridge to produce the focused, resonant character associated with this design. The internal sound-well bracing and F-holes complement the resonator body construction.

The instrument pairs vintage-inspired appointments with practical hardware, including a weathered trapeze tailpiece, chrome hardware, and Grover Sta-Tite die-cast tuning machines. Its vintage semi-gloss finish covers the laminated mahogany body and mahogany neck. A nickel-plated Poinsettia-design cover plate and 1930s-style Gretsch 3x3 headstock complete the traditional visual presentation.

The G9200 works as a standalone acoustic instrument in a guitar collection or as a specialized option alongside standard acoustic and electric guitars. It comes specified with D’Addario EJ16 phosphor bronze light-gauge strings, making replacement-string selection straightforward. For transport and storage, Gretsch lists optional G6296 round-neck resonator hardshell and G2180 gig-bag options.

Key Features

  • Ampli-Sonic Spider Cone: Hand-spun aluminum cone provides the instrument’s resonator voice and acoustic projection.
  • Laminated Mahogany Body: Traditional resonator body construction with a vintage semi-gloss finish.
  • Padauk Fingerboard: Provides a smooth fretting surface with white-dot position markers.
  • Soft “V” Mahogany Neck: Gives the guitar a period-inspired neck profile for fretted playing.
  • Spider Ebony-Tipped Maple Bridge: Transfers string energy to the resonator cone assembly.
  • Grover Sta-Tite Tuners: Die-cast tuning machines support routine tuning adjustments.

Design & Installation

The G9200 uses a non-cutaway resonator body made from laminated mahogany, with an internal sound-well, F-holes, chrome hardware, and a nickel-plated Poinsettia cover plate. Its mahogany neck has a vintage semi-gloss finish, Soft “V” profile, padauk fingerboard, bone nut, and 1930s Gretsch-style 3x3 headstock. The weathered trapeze tailpiece and spider bridge maintain the instrument’s traditional resonator configuration.

This is an acoustic resonator guitar, not a car-audio component, so vehicle mounting and wiring do not apply. Tune the guitar with the fitted D’Addario EJ16 .012-.053 phosphor bronze strings and use the optional G6296 hardshell case or G2180 gig bag for transport if desired. Any truss-rod or action adjustment should be approached carefully with the proper hex tool or handled by a qualified guitar technician.
