The Viper VSM550 SmartStart Pro is a connected-vehicle GPS and smartphone-control module for compatible aftermarket remote-start and security systems. It adds app-based vehicle location, monitoring, alerts, and supported control functions without requiring a handheld remote for everyday access. It can also operate as a stand-alone GPS device for vehicle location and selected alerts.

This module is designed for drivers who want to check on a personal vehicle, family vehicle, or small fleet from a smartphone. Location-on-demand, location sharing, speed alerts, and SmartFence boundary alerts help keep vehicle activity visible. A SmartStart service plan is required for cellular communication and connected features.

Its performance focus is connected convenience rather than audio reproduction. The VSM550 communicates over a 4G LTE cellular connection and uses integrated GPS for location-based features, with operation dependent on vehicle and phone signal availability. Two-way confirmation and vehicle-status functions are available when the module is paired and configured with a compatible system.

The compact module is intended for a concealed under-dash installation, helping keep the hardware out of sight. Status LEDs indicate cellular-network communication, data communication, and GPS acquisition during setup and troubleshooting. The module also uses a GPS sleep mode to reduce power consumption after inactivity.

For a full remote-control upgrade, the VSM550 pairs with most compatible digital remote-start or security systems and is optimized for Viper DS4 and DS4+ platforms. When properly integrated, it can support remote start/stop, lock, unlock, trunk, panic, auxiliary functions, and compatible vehicle-status reporting. It is a practical add-on for building a Viper SmartStart-connected vehicle system.

Design & Installation

The VSM550 is a compact black SmartStart Pro module with integrated GPS capability and side-mounted orange, green, and white status LEDs. Its harness-based design supports multiple Directed connection methods, including D2D, ESP, and analog-wire applications. The module is intended to mount high in the vehicle with the marked side facing upward and with minimal obstruction to communications.

Install and verify the compatible remote-start or security system before connecting the SmartStart module. Use only the applicable supplied connector and configuration wiring for the host system; the white 4-pin data connector is specifically for Directed digital systems. Activation requires the module AirID and a SmartStart account, while GPS-only use can be configured as a stand-alone installation.
