Studio Monitors 101
Studio monitors are speakers that tell you the truth. Hi-fi speakers flatter your music; monitors reveal it, which is exactly what you want when recording, mixing, or producing.
Why "flat" beats "flattering"
A monitor's job is an accurate, uncolored response so decisions you make translate everywhere else, the car, earbuds, a club PA. If your speakers hype the bass, you'll mix bass-light. Both PreSonus and KRK build their reputations on honest response at real-world prices.
Woofer size vs room size
Bigger woofers reach lower, but overload small rooms. Rough guide: 3.5–4.5" for a desk in a bedroom studio, 5–6" for most home studios, 7–8" for treated rooms with space to breathe. A matching studio subwoofer can extend a small pair later.
Placement in 30 seconds
Tweeters at ear height. Speakers and your head form an equilateral triangle, monitors toed in toward you. Keep them off the back wall if you can, boundary bass builds up. Isolation pads or stands tighten things up further.
Powered vs passive
Nearly all modern monitors are powered (built-in amps matched to the drivers), plug into your audio interface with balanced TRS or XLR cables and go.
