Mixer Basics

A mixer looks intimidating; it's really the same channel repeated. Learn one channel strip and you've learned the board.

The channel strip, top to bottom

Gain (trim) sets how hot the incoming signal is. EQ shapes tone. Aux sends split the signal to monitors or effects. Pan places it left/right. The fader sets its level in your mix.

Gain staging, the routine that makes any mixer sound clean

  1. Fader down, have the source perform at show level.
  2. Raise the channel gain until peaks hit about the meter's 0/unity mark, no clip light.
  3. Set the fader near unity (0) and balance the mix with faders, not gain.
  4. Leave headroom: if everything's slammed, pull all faders down together.

Analog, digital, or powered?

Analog, one knob per job, fastest to learn (Mackie Mix and ProFX). Digital, scenes, effects, and remote control from a tablet. Powered, mixer and amplifier in one box for passive speakers.

Buses in one sentence

A bus is just a road signals share, the main L/R mix is one, each aux send to a stage monitor is another.
